I have been using Gmail for a long time, handling the contacts has always been pain. I am glad see these improvements in Gmail the contact manger.
I just logged in to my Gmail and first thing I saw is a big balloon tip that says,
"We've pruned our pixels and made it easier to get to Contacts and Tasks."
(my gmail layout is green!)
So what are the changes?
The first noticeable changes you will see are,
- Mail, Contacts, and Tasks links has been switched to the top.
- Compose mail has been made in to a button.
- A smaller header area puts the first message in your inbox about 16 pixels higher on the screen.
If you know your way around you will notice some things are missing,
The options Select All, None, Read, Unread, and Starred links which used to be above your messages are now options in a drop-down menu, next to the Archive button.
Here are some handy changes,
Keyboard shortcuts now work in Contacts too -
Selecting and grouping contacts is much easier -
You can now Sort contacts by last name. (Look under More actions for this option) -
Use custom labels for phone numbers and other fields -
Manual and bulk contact merge. You can now merge contacts from the more actions menu.- Just select the contacts you'd like to merge and select Merge contacts from under the more actions menu. Or, to get a list of suggestions for contacts to merge, select Find and merge duplicates.
With these new changes to the Gmail contact manager and email layout Google proves to be best free email service out there.
